The Centre for Healthy Aging Transitions (CHAT) has been established in partnership with four organizations to facilitate a Christian faith-informed approach to healthy aging and life transitions associated with the later years of life.
Through CHAT, we aim to:
Provide resourcing opportunities for individuals, church leaders and pastors through educational and dialogue events on aging that recover the core values of the biblical teaching. These resources will also address the current church and societal/cultural concerns in order to meet the ministry/mission opportunities and challenges of the aging boomer generation.
Commit to helping others find the necessary resources for all the varied transitions experienced on the journey of aging through a website and other social media.
Mobilize a transformative movement committed to engaging maturing adults and promoting the awareness that aging is a time of growth and value in becoming contributing elders for Christian service and mission.
Redefining Retirement as a Spiritual Journey is a 15-session video series designed to help you transform retirement from an unfocused time of potential lethargy into a spiritual adventure. This series is available for the first time via streaming video. In this series participants will learn that retirement and the retirement transition is as much or more a psychological and a spiritual decision than it is a financial one.
Participants learn exactly what makes for a successful retirement transition. The program offers unique personal data so participants can make the most effective choices regarding the how, when, where, and why of the retirement transition and retirement living, even if they are already fully retired.
The program teaches that while we may retire from our jobs, we never retire from life; we always need a vocation, a life purpose; yet we do transition (usually more than once) throughout our maturing years. This program teaches how to make the retirement transition purposeful and meaningful so participants can live their retirement with purpose. This program is eminently helpful for two groups: 1) persons preparing for retirement (as much as 10-15 in the future) as well as, 2) those who are already retired.
Each video session is accompanied by a digital workbook in PDF format, intended for making the most of your spiritual journey through this series.
In addition, we recommend Dr. Johnson’s book Creating a Successful Retirement as a helpful resource in your journey. You can purchase the book by following this link.

Transitions of Life: Healthy Aging, Retirement & the Spiritual Journey (seminar offered regularly in various regions)
This seminar, taught by Dr. Paul Pierce, director of CHAT, has been established as an introduction and survey of aging as a Christian. This seminar will review the emerging trends, the challenges of aging, and the Christian framework for understanding the retirement time of life as part of our spiritual journey. The content and discussion will cover material and resources designed to help maturing adults (50+), either approaching or already in retirement to discover peace and purpose for this season of life through personal growth and ministry development. The legacy of faith, support of others and the presence and power of the Spirit has the potential to transform an ordinary retirement into an exceptional journey of discovery!
Tapping the Ministry Potential of Maturing Adults: Making a Difference (seminar offered regularly in various regions)
The church is facing an unprecedented time of challenge and opportunity in ministering with/to a rapidly growing number of maturing adults (55+/-) within our churches and communities. Adults entering into the middle and later years of life experience an expanding range of life concerns and questions which provide opportunities for the church to serve and care.
Through ministries with the aging and those caring for the aging there are many ways that we can discover and deepen a faith in the hope of the Christian message. Involvement with this emerging generation of maturing adults depends on a conviction that these ministries are making a difference in their lives (pastoral) and those being served in their communities (missional).
This seminar complements the original “Transitions of Life” seminar developed by Dr. Paul Pearce. It is designed as a teaching workshop for pastors, church leaders and those maturing adults interested in becoming better informed about ways to discern and design new ministries of care for themselves and their peers. There will be time for dialogue and networking with others around models of ministry, resources and ways to better engage their local communities in cooperation with other service agencies committed to providing care with/for maturing adults.
Please inquire to email@example.com or call 604.225.5917 if you are interested in hosting any of the above.
We have compiled a list of films to spark your imagination around the topic of aging. How does Hollywood depict aging on the silver screen? How is the idea of “aging gracefully” impacted by plastic surgery and the ideal of a youthful glow? Who are the elderly and what is their role? Check out the list here.
